Many people have asked me how I got started in graphic design. It all started when my twin brother Ed and I attended Westfield State because it offers an exceptional psychology program. Halfway though our first year, we realized that this was not our calling.
During the winter break, our older brother Gary sensed our lack of passion for our studies. He suggested graphic design. He mentioned that he’d noticed that we had both been filling our notebooks, sketchpads and any bits of paper with our “scribbles” and whatnot since we were big enough to wield a pencil.
We both responded by asking, “What’s graphic design?”
“It is everything”, he answered. “It is the creation of logos, symbols, shapes, colors and much more.”
“I can take classes in this and make money doing this?”
This instantly intrigued both my brother and I. We changed our majors from psychology to graphic design with a minor in art. From that point on our grades improved and our interest level soared. A sense of purpose was revealed.
Some of our friends “ribbed” us as we walked around campus lugging our large portfolios, but they all wanted to know which classroom we would be in during Drawing I which featured live nude models. Many years later my twin brother and I are happily employed in the graphic design business. Thank you, Gary!
